Grow and Care for Fringed Orchid

Grow fringed orchid in wet, acidic ground in full sun. It is Platanthera, a native orchid with a fringed lip, not a lady's slipper.

Give it full sun, or part shade, and acidic soil that stays wet

This is a hardy terrestrial orchid with fleshy roots. Site it where the ground stays wet and acidic, in a bog, a wet meadow, or along a pond. Full sun makes the strongest spike. 1. Give it full sun for most of the day. Part shade is fine only when the soil stays wet, as it would in a bog. [2]
2. Work peat or leaf mould into a bed that stays wet. Do not plant in a dry sandy border, and do not plant in a sealed hole with no outlet in summer heat.
3. Choose a bog, a wet meadow, or a pond margin. An indoor bark pot on a windowsill is the wrong mix. [3]

Grow it in a draining pot of terrestrial mix only if you have no wet bed

If you have no wet bed, use a draining pot of rich terrestrial mix that holds moisture, not a small bark orchid pot. Keep it wet through the growing season. After the leaves die back, give the pot a cool winter rest. A plunge in the garden bed can hold that chill. [4]

Keep it wet while it grows, then ease off after the leaves die back

Water through spring and summer so the soil stays wet, not crusted dry and not stagnant in heat. After flowering, the leaves yellow and die back. Cut that watering back. Resume when new shoots appear.

1. Water in dry spells while leaves and spikes are up. Do not let the bed crust dry, and do not flood a hole with no outlet in hot weather.
2. When the foliage yellows, stop soaking. Leave the dying leaves until they pull away. The fleshy roots are storing food for next spring.
3. Skip a heavy fertilizer program. A thin mulch of pine needles or leaf mould is enough. Rich, manured soil grows weeds that smother the orchid.

Not a lady's slipper, a moth orchid, or a Chinese hardy orchid
