How Bosquelle plant guides are written
Every guide at Bosquelle follows a single discipline: give you a clear, honest answer as early as possible, name the conditions where that answer changes, and say plainly when something is uncertain.
This page explains how the guides are researched and maintained — so you can judge the quality of the advice you are reading.
Who is responsible
Edward Nguyen founded Bosquelle and is responsible for the editorial standard described on this page. Pages are researched against named sources, reviewed before they go live, and updated when a correction is needed.
Work on this plant library started in 2024. Bosquelle is the name chosen when that library went public.
If a gardener contributes a specific experience that is published, they are credited by name with their permission. Corrections from readers are welcomed and, when verified, incorporated into the relevant page.
Research and sources
Guides draw on a combination of sources:
- Practical gardening experience — how plants behave in real conditions, including what goes wrong and why.
- Named horticultural authorities — sources such as the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), university extension programmes, and USDA hardiness zone data where relevant.
- Specialist literature — monographs, cultivar registries, and peer-reviewed research for harder topics (hardiness, disease resistance, companion planting evidence).
- Open taxonomic references — identifiers and distribution data from sources such as GBIF and Wikidata, cited on plant pages when used.
Where a claim comes from a single source, or where sources disagree, the guide says so. Conflicting advice is not smoothed into a false consensus.
Accuracy and honesty principles
Four rules apply to every guide:
- Do not invent specificity. A hardiness range is listed only when it comes from documented zone data or reliable trial records — not from reasonable-sounding guesswork.
- Name the conditions. Advice that applies in well-drained soil and not in clay says so. Advice that may not hold outside a stated climate says so.
- The common mistake comes early. If many gardeners get something wrong with a plant, that appears before the main care steps.
- Resistance claims are qualified. Deer-resistant means less often browsed in normal conditions. Drought-tolerant means handles dry spells better than many alternatives. Neither means proof against every situation.
How uncertainty is handled
When evidence is mixed, incomplete, or depends heavily on local conditions, the page says so directly. Phrases like “this varies by cultivar,” “evidence is limited here,” or “results may differ by climate” are not empty hedges — they help you calibrate expectations.
Confident-sounding advice is not published simply to fill a section.
Updates and corrections
Guides are updated when:
- A reader identifies an error or outdated detail.
- New cultivars or research change what should be recommended.
- A page has not been reviewed in a long time and may have drifted.
The date of the most recent substantive revision appears on each guide. Minor spelling or formatting fixes do not change that date. A meaningful change to care advice does.
If you find an error — a wrong hardiness rating, a misidentified plant, an inaccurate claim — email [email protected] with the page URL and the correction. Verified mistakes are fixed, and the record shows that a correction was made.
What is not published
- Sponsored plant advice (where a brand pays for favourable coverage).
- Claims from press releases that have not been independently checked.
- Safety advice for pest control without reference to the product label and local regulations.
- Medical or nutritional claims about edible plants beyond established, sourced information.
Independence
Bosquelle does not accept payment to feature specific plants, products, or services in editorial content. Some pages contain affiliate links, which are identified. Clicking an affiliate link costs you nothing and may generate a small commission. That does not change which products are mentioned or how they are described.
