Spring bulbs before the shrub leafs out

Purple Sensation, Tete a Tete, and Thalia color the bed in open spring light, then fade as the shrub takes over. Plant bulbs in autumn, outside the immediate crown collar, so you can still prune the viburnum after bloom without crushing every underplant.

If the canopy is already dense and little spring light reaches the soil, thin the shrub on prune timing before packing more bulbs into deep shade that will never flash.

Shade plants at the shrub’s feet

A dense evergreen Spring Bouquet may want fewer bulbs in the deepest shade and more at the brighter edge. When the shrub is young and open, start with a thinner shade layer and add denser feet only after the drip line is readable. Over-planting year one is how the understory becomes a seal. Water the shrub’s root zone, not a daily flood for the groundcovers.

Do not run a lawn sprinkler onto the woody collar every afternoon. Deep, less often, at the drip line is enough once the shrub is rooted. Groundcovers get what the shrub gets — they are not a second irrigation zone that keeps the flare wet.
