Proven Winners: potted verbena wants well-drained mix, not garden soil. Let the top inch or two dry, then water until it leaves the hole. Overwatering is rot and mildew. Baskets in heat may need water every day. Feed more often than in-ground plants because nutrients wash out — a bloom fertilizer at label rates every two weeks in active growth, not a weekly nitrogen dump.

Hang where you can reach the basket every hot morning. Wind dries mix fast and can shred wet foliage. A south or east patio hook beats a dim eave. Bring tender baskets in before nights near 50°F if you are trying to stretch the season. Most people treat the pack as annual color and start again after frost.

Lantana, calibrachoa, and petunia share the same sun-and-drain pot if you want a mixed basket. Match water needs. Do not pair a wet-footed impatiens with verbena.

Window boxes dry from the back against a hot wall. Check the mix with a finger, not the calendar. A 10-inch basket with three trailers is easier to water than a giant crate you cannot lift. Empty the saucer. Standing water overnight is rot, not insurance.

Trailer at the rim, not a tall haze

Use trailing series for spill. EnduraScape Red and Superbena are that job. V. bonariensis and Lollipop are see-through height. In a hanging basket they look leggy and steal light from the rim plants. A large patio tub can hold a shorter purple-top if you want height in a pot — still not the usual basket recipe.

How to pot verbena

1. Choose a basket or pot with drain holes. Do not block the holes.
2. Fill with fresh potting mix. Set the crown level with the mix surface, not buried.
3. For a 12-inch hanging basket, three trailing plants is a full show. Loosen circling roots.
4. Water until it drains. Hang in full sun. Keep mix evenly moist for a week, then let the top inch dry.
5. Deadhead clusters. Shear up to a quarter of the stems if bloom stalls in heat.

Do not pack the basket so tight that air cannot move. Mildew loves a wet, crowded canopy (Clemson Extension’s air rule still applies in a pot).

After a shear, wait for new shoots before you feed again. A hungry cut plant in a wet mix rots. Hang the basket back in sun the same day. Reach the hook each morning.

After potting

Check drain every watering. Empty saucers. If the mix stays wet overnight, you overwatered or the holes are blocked. If leaves bleach, the hang is too harsh at noon — a little afternoon shade still needs morning sun. If the plant is all leaf, stop the nitrogen feed and keep deadheading.
