Types of Verbena by Habit

Choose trailing, tall, hardy, or Glandularia

Blooming Expert’s split is the shop split: V. bonariensis for height, trailing hybrids for pots, V. rigida for hot dry edges, Homestead Purple for a perennial mat. Lollipop is a shorter purple-top — still the tall axis, not Superbena.

Superbena Dark Blue is basket language. V. bonariensis is haze language. Same genus name on the tag does not mean the same job. Pots on Verbena in Containers.

At the nursery, trailing packs look low and already spilling the pot. Purple-top looks like a handful of wiry stems with pompoms on top — even Lollipop is that architecture at half the height. Hastata looks like a verbena spike, not a bedding carpet. Homestead looks like a spreading mat with rose-purple clusters. If the tag says lemon, you are in the wrong aisle.

Height on the tag is a hint, not a type. An 18-inch trailer is still a trailer. A 24-inch Lollipop is still haze. Do not buy by inch-count alone. Sterile trailing hybrids bloom until frost and usually do not seed around. Bonariensis often does. That is why one gardener calls verbena an annual and another finds seedlings in May.

Wrong Verbena buys

• Lemon verbena / Aloysia — culinary shrub with scented leaves. Not this genus.
• Bonariensis in a hanging basket — leggy stems, wrong habit.
• Lollipop as a trailer — shorter haze, still not Superbena spill.
• Homestead Purple as a basket series — spreading ground layer, not a cascade pack.

Lantana, calibrachoa, and petunia share the sun bench. They are not types of verbena. If the Latin is Aloysia, leave this page. If the Latin is Verbena or Glandularia, stay and pick a habit.

Tapien and EnduraScape are still trailing bedding even when the leaf is finer or the plant is sold as mildew-tough. They are not hardy vervain. Texas, hoary, and western vervain are upright species for draining sun — not Superbena color packs. De La Mina is a lilacina shrub type in this catalog; it is not a hanging-basket series.

What each class offers

Trailing packs give continuous clusters from late spring until frost if you deadhead and keep sun. They are the usual hanging-basket buy. Tall purple-top gives airy height and often self-sows. Hardy vervain gives spikes and a different winter contract. Glandularia mats cover ground in sun. Other species in this catalog still want sun and drain — they are not a sixth care sheet.

If you want butterflies, tall purple-top and hardy vervain in a sunny border do that job. If you want a door basket, buy trailing series and deadhead. Mixing the two in one 10-inch pot wastes both plants. Color — pink, white, burgundy — is not a class. Habit is.

Shop once with a job in mind. Basket hook: trailing series. See-through border: bonariensis or Lollipop. Sunny slope that bakes: rigida. Spreading front: Homestead or prairie verbena. Tea shrub: walk to Aloysia. If the center sold you a mixed “verbena” flat with no Latin, use the habit test before you copy a neighbor’s basket recipe onto a spike plant.

Named series keep coming. Superbena, Lanai, Tapien, and EnduraScape are still one class. New color is not a new care sheet. Short purple-top selections stay with bonariensis. Glandularia names on a native tag still want sun and drain; they still are not Superbena.

Coastal mock vervain and prairie verbena sit with the Glandularia mats. Hoary and western vervain sit with hardy spikes. None of those is a lemon-verbena tea shrub. None is a substitute for a Superbena basket unless the habit actually trails. Read height, habit, and Latin — in that order — then buy.

Purple-top haze on wiry stems. Bonariensis, Lollipop, and Meteor Shower belong mid-border, not in a hanging basket. Often self-sows. Needs sun and air. Shorter selections are still this habit — they do not trail like Superbena.

Hardy vervain (7)

Hastata, rigida, and allied upright vervains for sunny, draining ground. Spikes, not basket spill. Different look from Superbena packs. Give them space so air moves; do not treat them as a hanging-basket recipe.

Glandularia and rose vervain (4)

Homestead Purple, prairie verbena, and Glandularia allies spread as a sunny ground layer. Not a hanging-basket trailer and not a two-meter haze. Use a wide trough or a bed front, not a small cascade basket.

Other verbena (1)

Species that do not fit trailing packs, purple-top haze, hardy spikes, or Glandularia mats — still full sun and drain, still not Aloysia lemon verbena. Read the Latin before you copy a Superbena watering rhythm onto a shrub type.
