Water Lily Companion Plants for Still Water

Water Lily Companion Plants for Still Water guide illustration

Pair water lilies with plants that share full sun and still water, and that leave part of the surface open. Do not carpet the pond. Lotus is a different pairing job.

Open water is the pairing rule. Pads already shade fish; more surface plants have to earn their place. [1] Oxygenators belong underwater, not as a second carpet. If the lily already shades half the pond, skip extra floaters.

What plants go well with water lilies?

Submerged oxygenators, a few marginals at the rim, and a modest floating plant — all in still, sunny water, with open surface left around the lily.

Oxygenators, marginals, and floaters

  • Submerged oxygenators — grow underwater and compete with algae. Pot them apart from the lily basket so you can thin one without tearing the other. [2]
  • Marginals — wet-soil plants at the shelf, not hostas moved into the pond for the summer.
  • Floaters — a few leaves for texture. Stop before they meet the lily pads.

‘Escarboucle’ is a pad-and-flower anchor: keep a clear ring of surface around it, then add one role per gap — not four plants in the same small bay. Keep the lily basket on its own so you can feed and divide it without ripping the oxygenators.

Can I mix water lilies with oxygenating plants?

Yes. Keep them in a separate pot or weight. They share calm sunlit water. They should not share one jammed basket.

What to leave out of the lily zone

  • A fountain return through the planting bay.
  • A pond that overflows into a creek. [3]
  • Floaters that cover the last open water. [4]
  • Lotus as if it were a water-lily companion — different depth and spread.

FAQ

Can I plant lotus with water lilies?

You can stand them in the same pond if the lotus has room to rise. They are not the same plant and not the same basket job.

Do I need fish with water lilies?

No. Pads shelter fish if you keep them. Fish are not required for bloom.

Can hostas sit in the water?

No. Hostas belong on dry ground beside the pond. Use true marginals in the wet shelf.

How many floating plants is too many?

If you cannot see open water around the lily pads, thin. The lily still needs sky.
