Types of Spider Plant – All-Green, White Center, or White Edge

Buy the stripe, not the word variegated. An all-green clump (spider plant), a white-center Spider Plant ‘Vittatum’, and a white-edged Spider Plant ‘Variegatum’ are three different plants on this shelf. Two shop tags can both say variegated spider plant. Mondo is Ophiopogon. Croton is Codiaeum. Fire Flash is usually another species we do not list here.

Choose by stripe — green, white center, or white edge

All-green spider plant is the rarer shop plant. More green tissue means dimmer rooms are kinder to it than to a mostly white stripe. Same dry-slightly water as the other two. If the basket already hangs with plantlets, you are looking at a mature clump, not a different genus.

Spider Plant ‘Vittatum’ is Clemson Extension’s most common variegated cultivar: pale green with a white stripe down the center. That is the usual “variegated spider plant” in a hanging basket. From below, the white stripe runs the length of the leaf. That is the plant most gift tags mean.

Spider Plant ‘Variegatum’ is the reverse: green center, white or cream edges. Same genus water. It often throws fewer plantlets than the center-stripe kind, so do not flood it to force babies. Hold a new leaf against the tag. Edge-white and center-white are not the same cultivar written twice.

Read a new leaf, not one old blade that greened out in a dim hall. Variegated tissue can go greener in low light. That is a site problem, not proof the shop sold you all-green. All-green from the start has no white stripe on the new growth. A plant that was striped and now looks plain wants a brighter indirect window, not a new Latin name. Take the basket to the window before you decide the tag was wrong.

Two hanging baskets on the same bench can both say variegated spider plant. One is white down the middle. One is white on the rim. Buy the leaf you wanted. Mixing both in one dish is fine if they share a drain. It is not a third type. If the tag only says spider plant and every new leaf is green, that is the species clump, not a faded Vittatum.

All-green, Vittatum, and Variegatum

Species spider plant is all green. This is the clump with the most chlorophyll, so it holds in a slightly dimmer room than the striped kinds. It still wants a drain. Plantlets match the mother if you clone them later.

Vittatum has a white stripe down the center. This is the common hanging-basket look. The white stripe is a ribbon, not a cream margin. In a dark corner the stripe muddies and the plant looks dull, not “less variegated as a type.” Move it before you rename it.

Variegatum has white or cream margins. The center stays green. People mix it with croton because the word variegatum also sits on painted Codiaeum tags. This leaf is a grass blade with a pale rim, not a thick painted shrub leaf. It may throw fewer babies. That is the cultivar, not a watering failure.

Read the new leaf, not one old blade that greened out in a dim room. All-green is a real look, not a sick variegated plant. Same water on all three: dry slightly, then drain. The cart mix-ups are other plants, not missing cards in this catalog. Use the tell at the tag, then leave them off this page. A hanging basket of plantlets is this genus. A painted shrub leaf or a turf clump is not.

• Mondo / Ophiopogon — a grass clump in the ground, not a hanging basket of plantlets. No airplane babies on long runners. Landscape mondo is a different genus even when a big-box bench sits next to spider plant.
• Croton / Codiaeum variegatum — a different genus that leaks on the word variegatum. Thick painted leaves, not runners. If the leaf is stiff, mottled, and woody at the stem, it is not this hanging grass.
• Fire Flash / Green Orange — usually Chlorophytum orchidastrum. Broad leaf, orange leaf-stalk. We do not list it as a card. It is a cousin in the genus, not comosum Vittatum with a new paint job.

• Airplane plant — still this species. Naming is not a second genus. Ribbon plant and spider ivy are the same job with different common names.
