Windmill palm has one growing point in the heart of the crown. Green fans feed that bud. Palms also move potassium out of old leaves into new ones, so a yellowing fan is often a shortage, not a reason to prune. Leave it until it is fully brown. [1] [2] The leaf stalks may carry fine teeth. Put gloves on before you reach into the crown.

  1. Stand back and look for fans that are fully brown, with no green left in the blade.
  2. Put on gloves and eye cover.
  3. Cut the brown fan close to the trunk, without gouging the bark.
  4. Leave yellow and green fans, even if they look tired. Cutting them pushes the shortage into the next ring.
  5. Cut spent flower or fruit stalks if the drop is a mess on a walk. Leaving them does not hurt the palm.
  6. Wipe the blade before you move to another palm, so you do not carry rot on a dirty saw. [3]

Can I cut green fronds on windmill palm?

No. Leave green and yellow fans. Cut only fully brown blades and spent stalks. Over-cutting makes the tree weaker, not neater.

The hairy wrap on the trunk is old leaf bases. Leave it. It is insulation in a freeze, and shaving it wounds the trunk. Never saw the top off to keep the tree short. The growing point sits in the crown, and cutting it kills the palm. [4]

  2. Do not hurricane-cut the green crown down to a few spokes.
  3. Never belt climbing spikes into the trunk. Those wounds let rot in.

Should I shave the fiber off the trunk?

No. Leave the fiber. It protects the trunk in a freeze, and pulling it off tears live tissue. Cut only fully brown fans.

Cut brown fans with gloves on, then stop. Green fans still feed the bud.

Can I cut yellow fronds?

Leave yellow fans until they are fully brown. Yellowing is often the palm moving nutrients into new leaves. Cutting them early makes the shortage worse.

Can I hurricane-cut windmill palm?

No. Do not cut the green crown down to a few spokes. That weakens the bud and does not help the palm through a storm.
