How to Plant Inula

Plant Inula at the same depth it grew in the pot, in spring or early fall. Leave 24 to 36 inches between clumps.

Set container-grown plants in spring. Space them 24 to 36 inches apart so air moves after rain. [1] Giant Inula wants a full 36 inches. [2]

I. helenium and I. magnifica take the same plant-out. Water in, and do not let the first summer bake the new roots.

Match the height on the tag to mid or back border space, or choose I. hookeri / I. britannica for a shorter slot.
Dig a hole in moist, drained ground. Set the crown at the same depth as the pot.
Backfill, firm, and water deeply to settle. Mulch lightly, off the crown.
Stake tall kinds now if the strip is windy — do not wait for the first storm.
Keep even moisture the first season. Do not let the hole dry to dust, and do not leave a puddle on the crown.

Divide established clumps in spring or fall. Each piece needs bud and root; replant at once and water to settle. [3]

Hot dry bank — leaves crisp; bloom stalls.
Winter puddle on the crown — rot, not a missing feed.
Front-edge giant — 6 ft stems on a 16 in edge will lodge.
Seed as the plant-out — surface sow works, but bloom waits until year two. Most gardeners plant a pot. [4]
