When should you plant gardenias?
Fall is the usual window in the South. Spring works if you can water through the first heat. Skip a July install unless daily water is already a habit.
How to plant gardenia
LSU AgCenter: the root ball should sit a little higher than the soil line. Allow for settle. Do not pile mulch on the stem.
- Water the nursery pot the day before so the ball slides.
- Dig a hole as deep as the root ball and twice as wide. Mix acid organic matter into the backfill.
- Set the plant so the top of the ball is slightly above grade. Tease circling roots. Do not bury the stem.
- Backfill. Firm. Water until it settles. Add soil if a crater forms, still keeping the crown high.
- Mulch 2–3 inches. Keep it a few inches off the stem.
- Water the first season whenever the top inch dries. Do not cultivate around the shallow roots. Do not fertilize at a fall plant-out.

Give it one undisturbed year. If a freeze browns the top, scratch the bark near the base before you replace it. Green under the bark means live wood.
