How to water, feed, and keep leaves green

University of Florida Extension: new-leaf yellow with green veins is usually iron locked by high pH. Older-leaf yellow in spring or fall can be normal shed. Use an acid-forming fertilizer or foliar iron while you correct the soil.

1. Water when the top inch starts to dry. Soak the root zone. Do not splash the flowers. Drip or a soaker at the base beats overhead spray.
2. Keep moisture even while buds are on. Mulch 2–3 inches, kept off the stem.
3. Where tap water is hard, use rainwater on pots so pH does not climb. Empty the saucer after every soak.
4. Feed with an azalea, camellia, or gardenia fertilizer in spring as growth starts, then again in midsummer. Skip fall feed.
5. If new leaves yellow with green veins, test pH. Work in pine bark or an acid amendment. Chelated iron greens the newest flush while pH drops.
6. Inspect leaf undersides for whitefly, scale, and mealybug. Treat the insect. If the whole plant collapses, that is root rot — fix drainage.

Buds drop when water, humidity, or temperature swing, or when you move a plant already in bud. Indoor heat and dry air do the same. Hold moisture even. Keep the plant in one spot.

Prune

1. Cut just after the main flush, usually midsummer.
2. Light shaping can continue through summer.
3. Do not hard-cut late — next year’s buds are already on the wood.

What fails

• Alkaline splash from new concrete — chlorosis on new leaves.
• Uneven water in bud — brown, dropped buds.
• Deep shade — glossy leaves, few flowers.
• Fall fertilizer — soft growth that winter kills.
• Salt or water-softener discharge.
