Grow and Care for Poppies

Grow and Care for Poppies guide illustration

Grow poppies (Papaver) in full sun and sharply drained soil. A tag that says poppy but reads California poppy is a different plant.

Sun and drainage come first. The genus includes both annuals and perennials, and Iceland types are usually grown as a cool-season crop. [1] Oriental clumps return from the same taproot for years in a cool-summer bed. Annuals such as corn poppy flower, set seed, and finish in one season. [2] If your soil stays wet after rain, raise the bed or work in grit before you plant — extra compost holds water against the root.

Are poppies perennials or annuals?

Both. Oriental poppy is a hardy perennial. Corn and breadseed poppies are true annuals. Iceland poppy is a short-lived perennial, often grown as a cool-season annual.

Oriental dormancy is not death

After the late-spring flush, oriental foliage yellows and the clump disappears. Leave those bristly leaves until they yellow on their own — they feed the taproot for next year. New leaves return in fall as a low mat, then push hard in spring. That bare patch is normal, not a failed plant. [3] Mark the crown so you do not dig the taproot in July. Pair a later plant on Poppy Companion Plants. Do not water a sleeping crown as if it were still in bloom. [4]

‘Patty’s Plum’ and ‘Royal Wedding’ follow that cycle. ‘Champagne Bubbles Orange’ does not: Iceland types want cool weather and usually need a fresh sowing rather than a summer rest.

What fails poppies

  • A moved taproot — direct sow annuals and Iceland types. If you must start indoors, use a biodegradable pot and plant the whole pot so the root never meets open air. Oriental clumps prefer to stay put; move them in August while they are dormant, if at all.
  • Wet winter soil — fleshy roots rot in standing water. A saucer under a pot is the same failure.
  • Digging a “dead” oriental in July — it is dormant.
  • Rich, leafy feed — stems go soft and bloom drops.
  • A California-poppy care card — that plant is Eschscholzia, not Papaver.

Can you transplant poppies?

Avoid it. The taproot checks badly if it meets open air. Direct sow where they will bloom, or plant a biodegradable pot whole. Move an oriental clump only in August, while it is dormant.

Kinds, seed, and partners

Once you know the class, annuals and Iceland types usually go to seed next, and an oriental clump needs a later plant for the summer hole. Sort the tag on Types. Surface-sow on the seed page. Cover the hole on companions.

Full sun and drain. Know the class. Leave a dormant oriental in the ground. Sow on Growing Poppies from Seed.

FAQ

Can I grow poppies in a pot?

Iceland types fit a deep pot. Sow in the pot they will keep. A taproot still hates a later move.

Should I fertilize poppies?

Skip high nitrogen. Average soil is enough. A heavy feed pushes leaf at the expense of flower.

Are poppies toxic if eaten?

Some species contain alkaloids. Keep pets and children from chewing leaves or pods. This is not a food-crop guide.

Is it legal to grow breadseed poppy?

Papaver somniferum is widely sold as an ornamental annual. Rules vary by place and by intended use. Check local law. Do not treat this page as extraction advice.

When do poppies bloom?

Most garden Papaver flower in late spring to early summer. Oriental bloom is a short flush. Annuals last longer if nights stay cool.

Should I deadhead poppies?

Deadhead annual and Iceland types if you want more flower. Leave some pods if you want seedlings next year. Oriental deadheading does not bring a second flush.

Can I divide an oriental poppy?

Only if the clump is crowded, and only in August while it is dormant. Most clumps can stay put for years.

Will Iceland poppies survive a hot summer?

Usually not as a long-lived clump. Treat them as a cool-season annual, and sow again when nights cool.
