How to Prune Oak in the Dormant Season

Prune oak in the dormant season. Do not cut in spring, when sap-feeding beetles can carry oak wilt into a fresh wound.

Winter is the safe window because the beetles and the fungal mats are not active then. [1] Do not prune from mid-spring through early fall unless a hazard forces a cut. [2] Live oaks that hold leaves still wait until other trees are dormant. [3]

When should I prune oak?

When the tree is dormant. Skip spring. If a storm breaks a limb in summer, cut it and paint the wound at once.

How to prune oak

Cut little, and cut clean.

Wait until the tree is dormant. Confirm red oak, white oak, or live oak only so you know wilt risk, not so you change the calendar.
Remove dead, rubbing, or storm-broken wood first. Keep a single leader on a young tree. Do not top it into a ball.
On a limb thicker than about an inch and a half, use three cuts: an undercut, a top cut farther out so the limb drops clean, then a final cut just outside the branch collar.
Leave the collar. Do not paint a dormant-season cut. Paint only if you had to cut in the growing season.

White oak still follows the same dormant rule. Wilt moves slower in the white-oak group, but a spring wound is still a risk. [4]

If you must cut in the growing season, paint the wound

Storm damage and a limb on a wire cannot wait. Cut to the collar, then paint the wound within about 15 minutes with ordinary latex paint. That is the exception, not the routine. Do not paint dormant cuts.

Do I paint the cut?

Only if you prune in the growing season. Paint at once. Skip paint on a winter cut.

If sap beetles are active and you already cut, paint the wound at once and stop further pruning until dormancy.

Can I top an oak to hold height?

No. Topping makes weakly attached sprouts. Pick a smaller kind before you plant, or remove selected limbs at the collar.
