Prune crape myrtle for a clean framework, not a topping cut into knuckles. It blooms on new wood, so a late-winter structure prune still flowers. Berry Dazzle and Dynamite take the same calendar at different heights. Sun and mildew stay on How to Grow Crape Myrtle.

Structure prune, not topping
| Factor | Recommended | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | A few strong trunks or stems; bloom on new wood | Cutting every branch to a knuckle (“crape murder”) |
| When | Late winter or early spring, before growth | A hard cut in early fall that pushes tender shoots into frost |
| Size | Buy the mature height you can keep | Annual topping because a tree form is under a wire |
| Dark leaves | Same dormant window as green-leaf types | Treating dark foliage as a different prune class |
UF IFAS: topping (heading, stubbing, “crape murder”) is not recommended. Virginia Extension: naturalistic thinning — dead, diseased, crossing, rubbing wood — and a well-trained plant does not need yearly hacks. Mississippi State: the most attractive plants are allowed their natural form. Ebony Flame still follows this calendar. Leaf color does not change the cut.
When and how to prune
- Wait until late winter or early spring, before buds push (UGA / MS State). Bloom is on new wood, so you are not cutting off this summer’s flowers.
- Stand back. Keep three to five strong trunks if you want a small tree. Keep a multi-stem shrub if that is the cultivar.
- Remove dead, damaged, crossing, and inward wood. Cut just outside the branch collar. Do not paint the wound (Virginia Extension).
- Rub or snip suckers at the base while they are small.
- Shorten only thin last-year twigs if you need to tidy. Do not cut large-diameter wood back to stubs every year.
- If last year’s topping left knuckles, take out the worst stubs over two or three winters rather than one brutal cut. Recovering a topped plant is slow. Replacing it with a smaller cultivar is often kinder.
Dwarf patio types still get the same dormant window at a smaller scale. Do not skip the cut on a Dazzle because it is short, and do not top a Dynamite because it is tall. Size at purchase lives on Types of Crape Myrtle.
Suckers, topped plants, and summer tidy
- Suckers at the base steal energy. Rub them off while green.
- Spent panicles can be snipped after a flush. That is deadheading, not a structure prune, and not a license to hard-top in July.
- A topped broom of weak sprouts flops and mildews. Thin those sprouts in the dormant window; do not repeat the topping.
- If the plant is simply the wrong size, stop fighting it. Choose a dwarf or mid shrub instead of an annual saw.

FAQ
When should I prune crape myrtle?
Late winter or early spring, before growth starts. It blooms on new wood.
What is crape murder?
Topping — cutting large stems back to knuckles. It ruins form, hides bark, and forces weak sprouts. Do not do it.
Will pruning stop the flowers?
A dormant structure prune does not. Flowers form on this year’s shoots. A July hard-top can delay bloom.
How do I prune a dwarf crape myrtle?
Same calendar, smaller cuts. Remove dead and crossing wood. Do not treat dwarf as a different plant.
Can I fix a topped crape myrtle?
Over several winters, thin the worst stubs and keep the strongest shoots. Or replace it with a cultivar that fits.
Should I remove suckers?
Yes. Rub them off while they are small.
Do dark-leaf types prune differently?
No. Same late-winter window. Leaf color is not a prune class.
Where is crape myrtle care?
