Pincushion protea grows in a container when the pot drains, the mix is a cactus or bark-and-sand blend, and you water when the top is dry without letting the mix go bone dry.

Grow it in cactus mix in a pot that drains
| Factor | Recommended | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Pot | A roomy pot with at least one drainage hole | Do not use a sealed cachepot with no hole |
| Mix | Cactus mix, or bark and coarse sand with no phosphorus feed in the bag | Do not use a compost-heavy mix or a bag with bloom fertilizer built in |
| Kind | A compact or mid-sized shrub for a patio pot | Do not force a large spreading hybrid into a tiny pot long-term |
These shrubs do well in pots because you control drain and nutrients. Use cactus mix, and skip any phosphorus in the bag. [1] Smaller and mid-sized kinds stay easier in a large container than a wide spreading hybrid. [2] California Sunshine and wart-stemmed pincushion fit a patio pot more easily than a tall, wide hybrid. A large roomy container with bark-and-sand mix still needs a hole in the bottom. [3]
- Choose a pot with a drainage hole. Set it on feet so the hole stays clear.
- Fill with cactus mix, or a blend of bark and coarse sand. Do not use a peat-heavy bag that stays wet.
- Slide the plant in at the same depth it grew in the nursery pot. Do not bury the stem, and do not tease the roots.
- Water until it runs from the hole, then empty the saucer.
What mix does a pot need?
Cactus mix, or bark and coarse sand with no phosphorus in the bag. A compost-heavy mix stays too wet and often carries fertilizer the roots cannot take.
Water when the top of the mix is dry
In the ground, an established shrub wants deep, infrequent water. In a pot, the mix dries faster, so do not let it go completely dry between waterings. Water when the top of the mix is dry, then wait — never leave the pot standing in a saucer of water. [4]
- Feel the top inch. Water when it is dry, not on a fixed calendar.
- Water until it runs from the hole, then dump the saucer.
- In heat, that may be every day or two. In cool weather, wait longer.
- If a freeze is coming, move the pot to a bright, frost- free spot and water less until nights warm.

How often do I water a pot?
When the top of the mix is dry. Do not let a pot go bone dry, and do not leave it standing in water. Pots dry faster than a mound in the ground.
If a pot stays wet after every watering, switch to cactus mix and empty the saucer before you add any feed.
FAQ
Can I keep pincushion protea indoors all year?
Only in a very bright room. Ordinary indoor light makes a thin, flowerless plant. Most gardeners keep the pot outdoors in full sun and move it in only for a freeze.
What size pot does it need?
A pot a little wider than the current root ball, with a hole. Compact kinds stay easier in a patio pot. A large hybrid eventually does better in the ground on a mound.
