How to air-layer a longan

  1. Choose a healthy branch about pencil thick, with mature leaves, in April through August.
  2. Girdle it. Remove a 2 to 2.5 cm strip of bark down to the wood, and scrape the exposed surface so it does not heal over.
  3. Wrap moist sphagnum, peat, or a similar mix around the wound, then cover the ball so it stays damp and rain cannot flood it.
  4. Wait 10 to 12 weeks, until the wrap is full of creamy brown roots.
  5. Cut below the new roots, trim some top growth to match the root mass, and pot the layer in mix that drains.
  6. Keep it warm, humid, and partly shaded until it is growing on its own.

How long until an air-layer roots?

Plan on 10 to 12 weeks in Florida. Wait until roots fill the wrap and have turned creamy brown before you cut.

What fails if you start named fruit from seed

A grocery seed can sprout, but the tree will not match the fruit you ate, and it is slow to bear. Cuttings can root under mist and bottom heat; that is a nursery setup, not a dry windowsill. Grafting onto a seedling is how nurseries make named trees; buy that tree if you do not want to air-layer. [4]
