Shrimp plant is a tropical clump. Give it even moisture and some afternoon shade, and the overlapping bracts keep their color. Harsh sun washes them out. [1] [2] A freeze cuts the top. In a mild winter the plant often returns from the base. North of that, grow it in a pot you can move.
Do shrimp plants prefer sun or shade?
Bright part shade is the usual bed. Morning sun is fine. Hot afternoon sun bleaches the shrimp-like bracts.
Will shrimp plants come back every year?
In a mild winter, yes — frost may kill the top and new shoots come from the base. Where freezes are hard and long, keep a pot you can bring inside.

- Dig a hole as deep as the pot and a little wider. Do not bury the stem in a compost collar.
- Set the plant at pot depth, backfill with the soil you dug, and water to settle.
- Space clumps about 18 to 24 inches apart. A shrimp-bract plant runs 2 to 6 feet tall in a happy bed.
- Water through the first weeks. Then keep even moisture in heat.

Shrimp bracts, Brazilian plume, or desert chuparosa
J. brandegeeana is the classic shrimp plant — overlapping red to pink-bronze bracts with white flowers. J. aurea is yellow jacobinia: upright yellow plumes, not a shop golden shrimp plant. J. carnea is Brazilian plume — tall tubular flower heads in rose, white, or yellow, not shrimp bracts. [3]
J. californica is desert chuparosa: full sun, dry rocky ground, red tubular flowers for hummingbirds. That is not the moist shrimp-plant bed. J. rizzinii and J. scheidweileri stay on the same warm, moist, part-shade program as shrimp plant. J. americana is water-willow for shallow water — a catalog cousin, not a bract shrub.
Is Justicia carnea the same as shrimp plant?
No. Brazilian plume carries upright tubular flower heads. Shrimp plant is the overlapping-bract clump.
Not a golden shrimp plant — and not water-willow
The plant sold as golden shrimp plant is usually Pachystachys, with upright yellow bracts. It is not J. aurea, and it is not J. brandegeeana. Another tag that says shrimp plant may be Phlogacanthus, a different Asian shrub. [4]
Water-willow is J. americana: narrow leaves in shallow water, not a tropical bract clump. Flamingo flower on a grocery tag is often Anthurium, not Brazilian plume. Seafood recipes are not this plant.
What is the difference between shrimp plant and golden shrimp plant?
Shrimp plant here is Justicia with overlapping bracts. Golden shrimp plant in shops is usually Pachystachys. Read the Latin on the tag before you copy its care.
Move a pot indoors before a freeze, or wait for new shoots from the base after frost.
