A tiny needle palm can live in a pot with a hole for a year or two while it puts on size. It is still a landscape palm, so it will outgrow a dim room. [4]
- Choose a heavy pot with a hole, only a size or two wider than the nursery pot, so the mix can dry a little between waterings.
- Fill it with a mix that stays moist but still drains. Do not use a cachepot with no hole as the only pot.

- Water once to settle the mix, wait about half an hour, then empty the saucer.
- Keep the pot in bright shade or morning sun. Water when the top of the mix has dried a little, then soak it again.

Not Adam's needle — and not a dwarf palmetto
Adam's needle is Yucca, a sword-leaf plant with curly threads on the leaf edges. Shops sometimes dump the name needle palm on that yucca. Are porcupine palm and needle palm the same plant?
Yes. Porcupine palm and blue palmetto are shop names for the same clustering fan, Rhapidophyllum hystrix. They are not extra kinds to collect.
When does needle palm flower?
Mature clumps send out yellow-brown flower clusters in summer, tucked among the leaf bases, then small fuzzy fruit. The fruit is not a kitchen crop.
Should I collect a wild needle palm?
No. Buy a cultivated plant from a nursery. Wild clumps are protected, and digging them is a poor start.
