Mondo grass is an evergreen strap clump, not a true grass. It prefers shade and soil that stays evenly moist while it knits. What else likes moist shade
Group it with other plants that want moist, drained shade — hostas, ferns, and other moist-shade evergreens. Skip a dry Mediterranean strip on the same valve. Mondo will not smother weeds until the clumps touch.
How long does it take mondo grass to fill in?
Usually several seasons. Ordinary green mondo often takes about three years to close; dwarf mondo can take about five if you start from small plugs.

Is monkey grass the same as mondo grass?
Usually no. Stores often mean Liriope. Mondo is Ophiopogon: narrower leaves, hidden flowers, blue fruit. Read the Latin.
Japonicus carpets; Nana stays low; black mondo is a slow accent
Culture is the same shade and moisture. Height and color are the choice. Do not treat a shop list of twenty names as a different plant.
O. japonicus is the classic green carpet under trees and along paths. O. japonicus ‘Nana’ stays about 3 to 6 inches for edges and stepping-stone gaps. O. jaburan ‘Vittatus’ is the variegated, coarser strap — a brightener in dark shade, not as tight a carpet as green japonicus. O. planiscapus ‘Nigrescens’ is the near-black accent: slower still, shorter and blacker in more sun, and it disappears in deep shade. Give it afternoon shade in hot climates. [4]
What is the difference between mondo grass and dwarf mondo grass?
Dwarf mondo stays much lower — about 3 to 6 inches — and fills even more slowly. Standard green mondo makes the usual shade carpet.
Does black mondo grass prefer sun or shade?
It takes sun to part shade. More light makes the straps shorter and blacker. In deep shade it fades. Give afternoon shade in hot climates.
Shear ragged leaves in late winter or early spring
Mondo does not need a monthly haircut. After winter storms the straps look ragged. Cut them once before new growth hardens.

- If you use it as a shade lawn alternative, you may mow standard mondo a few times a year at a medium height. Do not scalp it monthly like turf.

- Feed lightly in spring with compost or a slow-release shrub food if growth looks thin. Heavy nitrogen in wet shade pushes soft straps.
