Grow and Care for Beautyberry

Grow beautyberry in sun and well-drained soil. Beautyberry is Callicarpa — also sold as American beautyberry or French mulberry.

Give it sun and well-drained soil

Beautyberry is a sun-to-part-shade shrub. Full sun packs more fruit; light shade is fine under high pines or at a woodland edge. Deep shade thins the berry display. [1] Well-drained soil is the usual bed. Once roots take, the plant handles dry spells. [2] Do not pile on fertilizer. Extra feed makes lanky stems and a weaker fruit set. [3] American beautyberry wants that same sun and drain. So does purple beautyberry.

Water the first season, then only in a long drought

New plants need regular water through the first growing season. Once roots take, beautyberry handles heat and dry spells better than a soggy low spot. [4]

1. Soak after planting, and keep the root ball moist through the first season.
2. Water in a long drought. Do not wait for the leaves to wilt hard in July heat.
3. Mulch the root zone, and keep the mulch off the stems so the bark stays dry.
4. Do not leave the crown in a puddle. Keep the root ball moist the first year; do not leave standing water around the stems.

Set a new plant on Planting Beautyberry so the crown sits even with the soil. Cut it in late winter on Pruning Beautyberry — berries form on new wood.

Grow it in a draining pot if you need one on a patio

Open ground that drains is the usual home. A pot works when you want a compact kind on a sunny patio, or when the bed stays wet.

1. Use a pot with a drainage hole, large enough for an arching shrub — not a 6-inch indoor pot.
2. Fill it with potting mix that dries after a soak, not garden clay.
3. Water when the top couple of inches are dry. A pot dries faster than the ground, so check more often in heat.
4. Keep the pot out of a winter puddle. Raise it so the hole stays open.

Take a softwood cutting if you want more plants

Softwood cuttings in late spring or early summer root for many kinds. Seed also works for the species. Named cultivars may not come true from seed.

1. Cut a 4- to 6-inch tip of this year's growth, below a leaf joint.
2. Strip the lower leaves. Dip the cut end in rooting hormone if you have it.
3. Push the stem into moist, gritty mix — not soggy. Keep it in bright shade until it resists a gentle tug.
4. Pot it on once roots hold, and keep it frost-free through the first winter.

American beautyberry vs Asian kinds, and not a mulberry

American beautyberry is the southeastern native. Its fruit clusters sit tight against the stem, and the leaves are usually larger. Asian kinds such as purple beautyberry often hold fruit on longer stalks and stay a bit more compact. All of them want the same sun and drain. French mulberry is a common name for this shrub. If berries are thin, give the shrub more sun — do not add fertilizer to compensate.
