avocado will sprout from a grocery seed, and that is a fair science project. It is a poor way to get the fruit you just ate, because the seedling is a new tree, not a copy. [1] A seedling may take five to ten years to flower. A grafted nursery tree can bear in about three years, and the fruit matches the tag. [2] Warmth matters more than a calendar. A cold windowsill stalls the split. Keep the mix barely moist, not standing in a bowl of water, so the seed does not rot before the root shows. Will a grocery avocado come true?
No. The seedling is a new tree. It may never match the fruit you ate, and it is slow to bear.
How to sow an avocado seed
Use mix, not a glass of water, if you want a tree later.
- Wash the seed. Leave the brown seed coat on if it is intact.
- Fill a small pot that drains with a fast-draining mix. Set the wide base down and the pointed end up, with the top third of the seed still in the air. [3]
- Keep the mix barely moist and the pot in bright, warm light. A windowsill is enough. Roots often show in a few weeks.

You can, as a classroom trick. If you want a tree, sow it in mix from the start, pointed end up, so the roots are not trained to a glass of water.
